I'm João Victor Bohn Alves, a medical graduate of UFRJ (2015), a faculty member at IDOMED Barra, a specialist in Family and Community Medicine through SMS-RJ (2018, RQE 27699), a Master of Public Health graduate of ENSP/Fiocruz (2022) and co-founder of Corcovado Medicina de Família (2022).
A father of two, endlessly curious, with a love of nature, life, science and the many things that make us human. Interested in people, their lives and how to help them be themselves, in better health.

Questions about appointments
Is a family doctor the same as a GP?
Family doctors provide primary care: the first assessment of symptoms, care for ongoing conditions and help coordinating treatment when other professionals are needed. My registered specialty in Brazil is Family and Community Medicine. You may be more familiar with the term GP or primary care physician; the emphasis here is on knowing you and caring for your health over time.

No. Pain, a new symptom, a worrying test result or a question about your health are all reasons to make an appointment. The consultation is also a chance to work out what is happening and where to start. You can describe what you are experiencing in English.
Can I see a family doctor for anxiety or depression?
Yes. Mental health is part of primary care. The consultation looks at what you are going through and how it affects your everyday life. When a psychologist or psychiatrist needs to be involved, care can be arranged together.
Mental health careDo you provide care for high blood pressure and diabetes?
Yes. Ongoing care includes discussing your routine, reviewing medication and test results, and deciding what needs attention at each stage. Another specialist can be involved when needed.
Care for long-term conditionsCan I have an online appointment or a home visit?
Both are available, alongside appointments in Jardim Botânico. Online consultations in English are available throughout Brazil, when a physical examination is not needed. For home visits, availability at your address is confirmed when booking.
