Dr. João Victor Bohn Alves
I'm João Victor Bohn Alves, a family physician, medical faculty member and co-founder of Corcovado. I studied medicine at UFRJ, completed my residency in Rocinha and earned a master's degree in Public Health at Fiocruz.
A father of two, endlessly curious, with a love of nature, life, science and the many things that make us human. Interested in people, their lives and how to help them be themselves, in better health.

What matters to me
Why family medicine
There is a reason behind every appointment. Sometimes it is pain; sometimes a fear of illness, a wish to change something or a question left unanswered. Having room to explore those reasons helps make sense of what matters to the person sitting across from me.
Family medicine makes it possible to get to know people over time. Knowing how you live, what you value and what happened with previous treatments changes the way care is provided. It also helps clarify when to investigate, when to wait and observe, and when another professional could help.
Working in Rocinha and Santa Teresa brought me into contact with very different circumstances. That experience shaped my attention to life outside the consultation: a care plan needs to make sense in the everyday life of the person who will put it into practice.
How I work
Thoughtful prevention
More tests are not always helpful. The aim is to understand what could benefit you, explain the risks of too much investigation and give proper attention to what needs care.
Learning and explaining
Science matters to me, including how it changes everyday practice. Explaining the reasoning behind a recommendation is part of the consultation: advice is more useful when you understand why it was offered.
Continuity of care
Knowing your history makes it easier to notice changes and adjust the plan. Decisions, tests and treatments are documented; when other professionals are involved, care is coordinated.
